Air conditioners are an expensive investment, so it’s only natural that you’d want to keep them in their peak condition for as long as possible. The key to doing so is regular maintenance and keeping it clean. Having said that, some people are unsure whether or not they should cover their air conditioners as a way to keep them clean. If you own a split air conditioner, you’ll have the condenser sitting outside, and being exposed to the elements, it’s more vulnerable to dirt and grime.
So, do you need air conditioner covers? If so, when and how do you use one without harming your air conditioner?
Air conditioner covers are customized enclosures designed to keep leaves, rats, and filth out of your air conditioner. They are also used to keep out rain and extra moisture. As you know, moisture can cause the condenser coils of an air conditioner to freeze, causing damage over time. However, do note that it is impossible to keep moisture out 100 percent of the time, even with an AC cover.
They do, but the more important question should be, do you need them? The thing is, you don’t need an air conditioner cover. One of the few reasons for an AC’s high prices is its durability. Your air conditioner is designed to withstand adverse weather conditions such as heavy rain and blistering heat.
The condenser is coated with a durable finish to avoid deterioration, and its internal components, such as coils, are likewise designed to withstand extreme weather. The endurance of your air conditioner is one major reason why you don’t require outdoor air conditioning covers.
Another thing to note is that with an air conditioner cover, you trap moisture inside the condenser, which can lead to mold growth.
Your air conditioner was designed to withstand rain and heat. It will not, however, keep out leaves, seeds, or dirt. If they get lodged within your condenser, they can significantly harm the coils and other components inside. Therefore, these covers are only recommended if you live in a densely forested area or if your condenser is heavily exposed to dirt.
When you use an AC cover, cover only the top of the outside unit and keep the cover at least 6 inches above the unit. Cover only a portion of the block. Additionally, avoid using plastic covers to protect your air conditioner, since you’re only going to suffocate it. Use coverings made of breathable textiles and plywood instead.
Remember, unless you are experiencing extreme temperatures or you live in an area where your AC is likely to suck in leaves and dirt, it is recommended not to utilize air conditioner covers. Your air conditioner is already designed to withstand ordinary and extreme temperatures, after all.
