How to Dispose of an Air Conditioner — Eco-Friendly Options
Safer ways to retire an old aircon in the Philippines — refrigerant handling, scrap, take-back, and what not to do.
Don’t vent refrigerant
Old units still contain refrigerant and oil. Releasing gas outdoors is harmful and may violate environmental rules. Use people who recover refrigerant properly.
Practical options
- Ask the brand / retailer if they offer haul-away when you buy a replacement.
- Hire an HVAC tech to recover refrigerant, then scrap the metal shell.
- Use legitimate e-waste / appliance recyclers in your city when available.
- Condo or barangay bulky-waste schedules (confirm AC rules first).
- Donate working units only through channels that will service them safely.
- Keep paperwork if a buyer hauls it for parts — keep refrigerants out of casual junk piles.
Safety
Window units are heavy and awkward on stairwells — plan two people or professional haul-out.
