How to Choose the Right Size Aircon for Your Room
Practical HP and room-size guidance for Philippine bedrooms and living rooms — avoid underpowered units and oversized short-cycling.
Correct sizing decides whether an aircon feels comfortable or loud, wet, and expensive. Horsepower stickers are marketing shorthand — still useful if you combine them with room facts.
Measure what actually affects cooling load
- Floor area (length × width)
- Ceiling height above ~2.7–3 m
- West- or afternoon-facing windows
- Kitchen adjacency or thin walls
- How many people typically occupy the room
- Hours of continuous cooling
Philippine humidity means coils also work as dehumidifiers. A struggling undersized unit often runs flat-out and still feels sticky.
Practical HP ranges (starting point)
These ranges are conversation starters for typical Filipino bedrooms — not engineering certificates:

Window vs split capacity reality
Window units must cool from a warmer, noisier chassis location. Splits can feel quieter at the same capacity because the compressor sits outdoors. Portable units lose efficiency to hose heat and imperfect window seals — size carefully and vent properly.
Why bigger is not always better
An oversized fixed-speed window unit may blast cold air, shut off quickly, then leave humidity high. Inverter splits handle oversizing better by modulating, but you still pay more for hardware and install you may not need.

- Note sun exposure and ceiling height.
- Decide window / split / portable.
- Shortlist two HP options at most.
- Compare EER/CSPF and warranty — not only cold feel in the showroom.
