How Long Do Air Conditioner Filters Last?

Share

If you own an air conditioner, you are most likely aware that they have air filters to keep the air you breathe free from germs and keep your AC running smoothly. These air conditioner filters aren’t intended to last forever since they will eventually fill up with filth. So, how long do you use an air filter until you need to replace or clean it? Read below to find out.

What is an Air Filter for?

The function of air conditioner filters is frequently misunderstood by many. While it does filter the air, its primary function is to safeguard the delicate components of your HVAC system rather than to clean the air you breathe. Some units may come with two or more filters that function as a dirt-deterrent for your AC and an air purifier for your home.

There are two kinds of air filters:

  1. High-efficiency filters are designed to filter out microscopic bacterial, mold, and fungal particles. An example of this is HEPA or high-energy particulate air filters. These are the only filters that capture allergens and spores, and they have a considerably finer mesh than regular filters. These air filters can screen out microscopic particles including pollen and mold spores. They are classified according to their MERV scores, which range from 1 to 20. The higher the grade, the better the filter is in capturing microscopic particles.
  2. Conventional filters, such as MERV 8-11 filters, will only block out dust, dirt, and hair

Why Do I Need To Change My Air Conditioner Filters?

Neglecting to change or clean your air filter can lead to several problems. The first issue would be decreased energy efficiency due to accumulated dust.

With filth clogging all the working components of your air conditioner, such as valves and fan motors, your system will work harder, and in turn, use more electricity, just to keep itself working. If left unattended for long, the AC components will overheat and break. Another issue to be concerned about is the additional terms that can enter your household due to a dirty or contaminated system.

How Often Do I Need To Change Your AC Filters?

Depending on the system, you need to either change or clean your filter. Paper filters, with cardboard frames and a paper screen, are disposable, while stronger filters, generally with metal frames, are reusable and can be cleaned.

The frequency with which you change your house’s HVAC air filter is determined by how long the filter is expected to survive and the many factors around your home that can affect the filter’s longevity.

For example, hair from indoor pets becomes airborne in your house and these compounds clog air filters more quickly. Filters should be replaced every two months in homes with one pet and in homes with many, the filter should be replaced monthly.

Frequent usage also affects how long your filter will last. When the HVAC system is utilized often the air is circulated throughout the residence more frequently than when it is used rarely. More cycles imply more air runs through the filter, which in turn means the filter collects more pollutants. Air filters tend to fill up faster during peak usage periods.

If you have an allergy or suffer from asthma, clean air is essential for both your health and comfort. This means you’ll need to change your HVAC filter more regularly, at least twice a month.

Final Notes

To ensure your AC’s air filter works properly, you have to make sure you purchase the correct filter for your AC system. A clean filter is important for your air conditioner to work at its best. The simple act of regularly cleaning your air filters also ensures your AC can stay in top shape for years to come.
